Outdoor Activities across Powys and Shropshire.

Mid Wales has a diversity of landscape with outdoor activities to suit all kinds of interests and The Forest Country House is ideally situation for people who wish to take part. Within a short drive there are a number of venues and activity centres to suit people of all abilities across Powys and Shropshire.

The following activities are close to our self catering accommodation. More information about the attractions are available at the bed and breakfast and we can often give advice as we have visited most of them ourselves.

Horse
Horse riding

Bridleways are plentiful in this beautiful region. There are riding stables nearby or bring your own horse on holiday and stay with us at The Forest. The Kerry Ridgeway with its remarkable views is ideal for walkers, horse riders and mountain bikers, all of whom can legally trace this prehistoric way throughout.



Cycling

This is a fabulous area to explore by bike. There are lots of quiet country lanes which are great to cycle and an extensive network of paths if you enjoy off-road cycling. Lon Cambria (National Cycle Route 81)traces a picturesque 110 mile route from the coast to Shrewsbury and passes close to nearby Newtown. The Radnor Ring (Regional cycle route 25)is a delightful 86 mile scenic tour in Radnorshire. There are dedicated way-marked trails in Rhayader. The towpath along the canal between Newtown and Welshpool is a delightful level route to cycle with plenty of good pubs to stop at for refreshment along the way. For young children there are also cycle paths in the park in Newtown.

There is an abundance of fishing in Mid-Wales and permits can be issued by Severnside & Newtown Angling Club. Newtown Fishery, Caersws, Penarth and Aberbechan have excellent fishing on the Severn and are all close to Newtown. The Clywedog reservoir at Llanidloes is one of many reservoirs popular with anglers.

Bird watching

Mid Wales has the greatest density and diversity of birds of prey in southern Britain. House Martins, Swallows and Swifts breed in the roof of Forest Cottages and you can sit and watch them feeding their young in the springtime. Around our garden we have Dippers, Grey Wagtails, Pied Flycatchers, Redstarts, Wood Warblers, Garden Warblers, Blackcaps, Woodpeckers, Goldfinches and many other birds.

 

Mid Wales is most noted for birds of prey including Red Kites and Buzzards which can be seen soaring over the hills. The following nature reserves are popular with visitors

Shooting is a major pastime in Mid Wales and there are several facilities for clay pigeon and pheasant shooting. Tuition is available and there are many packages on offer. Here are a few of the locations.

There are many golf clubs in the area suitable for players of all levels. Mid Wales is a vast area which offers a classic variety of golfing test and you can enjoy some superb scenery at the same time.

Mid Wales is a favourite place for bike touring. The scenery is breathtaking, the roads are twisty, and there is no shortage of places to visit. The roads up to the Kerry Ridgeway offers wonderful views. There are also off road trailing courses for beginners and experienced riders. Here are a few sites.



Quad Trekking, Biking, Paint Balling, Karting

A great day out for older children and adults. Take a trek down green lanes to see breathtaking and beautiful areas. There are a variety of centres which can cater for paint-balling, quad biking, mountain biking, laser clay pigeon shooting, white water rafting, and much more. Take a picnic and have a family day out.

Forest Experience Rally School

At the Forest Experience Rally School you learn to drive a rally car in a half or full day course. You will be instructed in specific rally driving techniques such as handbrake turns and power-sliding. Tackle the very demanding six-mile stage before you do your two timed special stages; there is a trophy and bubbly for the winner and certificates for all.

What better way to see the beauty of Mid Wales than from the air. Take a balloon flight, try paragliding or fly a glider over some of the most beautiful landscapes in the UK. Below are just a few of the possibilities.

Enjoy a day out on the Montgonery Canal on a canoe or kayak. Kingfisher Kayak Hire will hire you the boats you need for an excellent day out from Abermule, just 3 miles away.



Zip World and Caverns

Titan is the ultimate group zipping experience, the largest zip zone in Europe. Zipping in a seated position, you are afforded stunning views over Blaenau Ffestiniog and down the valley ahead. Zip World Titan encompasses three zip lines making a total length of over 8km

Zip World Caverns is a remarkable, uniquely exhilarating and atmospheric underground adventure that has been inaccessible for nearly 200 years. It is the ultimate all weather adventure! You will take an epic journey through the underground caverns on zip lines, rope bridges, via ferrata and tunnels.

Navigate a 8m long gap in the rock, scale the 25m drop using just a 12mm wide rope or inch your way, swing-by-swing, using the 14-rung monkey bars. Then take the ‘stairway to heaven’, the third and highest via ferrata consisting of 36 steps that takes you to the highest point on the Caverns course, 30m above ground.
